Best AI Chatbot for Shopify in 2026 (Tested & Ranked)

We tested 5 Shopify AI chatbots on the same store. Here is which one actually converts, which one over-promises, and how much each costs at scale.

The Shopify App Store lists more than 200 chatbot apps. Most are repackaged generic widgets with a Shopify logo on the listing. A handful are actually built around what Shopify stores need: cart awareness, product recommendations, abandonment recovery, and integration with the order system. We tested five of the credible ones over 30 days on a mid-sized apparel store. Here is what came out of it — which converts, which annoys customers, and which costs ten times what it should.

The shortlist (and why these five)

The five tools we tested:

  • Glozr — AI sales chatbot with hesitation detection, white-label option
  • Tidio — long-standing chat tool, AI layer added in 2024
  • Gorgias — support-first, sales chat as a secondary feature
  • Chatbase — Q&A-focused chatbot, Shopify integration via embed
  • Crisp — chat platform with AI agent add-on

We excluded tools that did not have a Shopify-native integration or required a developer to install. We also excluded apps that priced per conversation (anything per-conversation gets cost-prohibitive on a store with traffic).

The test setup

The store: a fashion brand selling $40–120 items, roughly 8,000 visitors a month, baseline conversion rate 1.9%.

Each chatbot ran solo for 6 days. Same triggers configured: hesitation on product page, time on cart page, exit intent on checkout. Same knowledge base uploaded: sizing guide, shipping policy, return policy, top-30 product descriptions.

Metrics tracked: engagement rate, lead capture rate, completed checkouts attributable to the chat, and customer feedback on the experience.

How they ranked

1. Glozr — Best for active sales conversion

The active-engagement model is the differentiator. Glozr opened conversations when visitors showed real hesitation (long time on product page, cart abandonment signals) rather than waiting for a click. The opener was contextual to the page — "Comparing sizes? The fit notes for this style are below" — which drove a 14% engagement rate, the highest in the test.

Knowledge accuracy was solid out of the box once the sizing guide and shipping rules were uploaded. The hallucination guardrails refused to invent shipping prices, which is the most common failure mode on the other tools.

Pricing: $19 Starter, $49 Pro, or $990 one-time for the white-label license. The flat-rate unlimited conversations model wins at scale.

Best for: stores that want to actively convert visitors, not just deflect support tickets.

2. Tidio — Best for support-heavy stores

Tidio is mature, polished, and has the best mobile experience of the five. Its AI ("Lyro") is competent but biased toward deflection — it answers questions to close the chat, not to push toward checkout. Engagement rate was 9%, lead capture 5%.

Where Tidio shines is the unified inbox: chat, email, and Messenger in one place, which matters if your team handles support manually.

Pricing: $29–59/mo for chat, AI add-on around $39/mo extra. Conversation-capped on lower plans.

Best for: stores where support volume is high and sales lift is a secondary goal.

3. Gorgias — Best if you already use it for support

Gorgias is a support-first platform. Its AI chat is a recent addition and shows it: the opener is generic, the trigger logic is shallow. Engagement rate was 6%, lead capture 3.5%.

But if you are already paying for Gorgias for support, the AI chat costs little extra and integrates with your existing ticket flow. That convenience matters.

Pricing: $50–750/mo depending on ticket volume, AI add-on per resolved conversation.

Best for: stores already using Gorgias who want a basic AI layer.

4. Chatbase — Best for FAQ accuracy

Chatbase has the best raw Q&A accuracy in the test. It nailed every question about return windows, fit guides, and product specs. The problem: it does not initiate conversations. The visitor has to click the widget. Without active triggers, engagement was 4%.

If your customers are asking very specific product questions and finding answers themselves, Chatbase is a good upgrade from the static FAQ. But it does not replace a sales chatbot.

Pricing: $19–399/mo, conversation-capped.

Best for: stores with a lot of FAQ-heavy traffic who want better self-service answers.

5. Crisp — Most polished UX, weakest AI

Crisp has the cleanest chat interface and the best in-store widget styling. The AI agent add-on is recent and less mature than its competitors. Hallucinations were the highest in the test — Crisp's AI invented a "60-day return policy" we did not have.

If the AI matures over the next year, Crisp could leapfrog. As of 2026, it is not where the AI is most reliable.

Pricing: $25–95/mo, AI add-on ~$40/mo.

Best for: stores that prioritize design polish and have a human on hand to monitor the AI.

The numbers side by side

ToolEngagement rateLead captureAttributed orders / monthCost / month
Glozr14%9%38$49 (or $990 one-time WL)
Tidio9%5%21$98 (chat + AI)
Gorgias6%3.5%12$50–250+
Chatbase4% (passive)2%7$79
Crisp8%4%16$65

The Glozr lift is not a coincidence — active engagement on hesitation signals consistently produces a 2–3x engagement rate over click-to-chat tools, and that flows directly into conversions.

What to look for beyond our list

A few criteria we did not weigh heavily but you might:

Multilingual. If you ship internationally, the chatbot needs to handle the languages of your top 5 markets. All five tools support multilingual responses, but the accuracy degrades outside English unless you upload translated knowledge bases.

Headless commerce. If your storefront is Hydrogen, a custom React frontend, or Shopify Plus with heavy customization, the embed flexibility matters. Glozr and Chatbase are the most flexible. Tidio and Crisp work best on standard Shopify themes.

Subscription-aware. If you sell subscriptions, the chatbot needs to handle subscription-specific questions (pause, swap, cancel). None of the five do this perfectly out of the box; you need to upload the subscription policy yourself.

FAQ

Will the chatbot slow down my Shopify store? Widgets load asynchronously and add 30–80 KB. On any modern Shopify theme, the performance impact is invisible. Avoid any tool that requires synchronous loading.

Can the chatbot process refunds or order changes? Most chatbots can show order status when integrated with Shopify, but processing refunds or changes typically still routes through Shopify admin or a human. This is a feature, not a bug — automated refund processing creates fraud surface.

Do these tools work with checkout extensibility? Active engagement on the new Shopify checkout (post-2024 architecture) requires the vendor to use the Checkout UI Extensions API. Glozr and Tidio support this; the others are still on legacy embed.

What to do next

Run a free trial of two of these (Glozr plus one other) on the same page for two weeks. Same triggers, same knowledge base. The engagement rate difference will tell you everything.

Start free with Glozr — Shopify install in 30 minutes. → White-label Glozr for your clients — $990 one-time, sell it under your brand.

The right chatbot for Shopify is the one that engages, not the one with the best demo video.
